1858 and the great stink of London

ward Our Family & Me Team

The image associated with todays blog, is that of Elizabeth Ann Chew (married Hampsheir). She was born at St. John’s Wapping in 1847 and grew up while the family lived at Broad Street. This location was adjacent to Anchor & Hope Alley, which was home to many branches of my family. The location was close to the waterfront of the River Thames.

Owing to many years of being poorly managed by the city of London, in 1858 there came a great ‘stink’ associated with the unseasonably hot weather and raw sewage emptying directly into the River Thames. Unfortunately for Elizabeth, she and her family were on the front lines of this unpleasant disaster! In spite of London experiencing outbreaks of Cholera in that period, Elizabeth and her family endured and survived the ordeal.

Anchor and Hope Alley will be a blogging topic as we go forward.
