In 1778, this Kent newspaper ad surfaced and was recruiting ‘substitutes’ for Militia service. My ancestor, John Ashbee’s name surfaced in this ad and begs a question about him. Was John canvasing a replacement for himself or was he simply helping the recruitment process?

Although speculative, one might imagine John didn’t wish to be a part of military service back in the day. John was part of a family of status, so parting with 10 guineas wouldn’t be much of a financial burden, to be spared from time in the militia.

This scenario is yet another where more information would be a great help.
