I have blogged many times about my Kerr family of Roxburghshire, Scotland and London, England. Historically, Roxburghshire was a hub of textile manufacturing, noting Scotch Lawn, Gauze and Hosiery were most notable. These items have also surfaced in the history of John and Jame Kerr.
They were in the hosiery, linen and textile manufacturing business and at that quite dedicated to it. John and Jane Kerr (Elliott) were my 5X great grandparents and tracing them in the London trade directories from the 1700’s was most profitable.
The directory records indicated that they were located at ’20 Watling st’ and as you see in the image, Jane was listed separately at Gracechurch st as a hosier! Their only son, William, was also listed as a similar textiles merchant at 14 King st, Tower Hill.
Their family was small but focused on their enterprise and making it a success. William Kerr’s Will of 1801 reflected a prosperous career as a London Merchant.
