What does ‘late’ mean?

ward Our Family & Me Team

The Kirkby Malham, West Yorkshire baptismal records of 1743 are the source of todays image for our blog. In this record, my 4X great grandfather, John Ingles (later Angel) was baptised on December 26. A question arises about the status of his father ‘Thomas’ and the aspect of ‘late of Otterburn’.

One has to wonder what ‘late of Otterburn’ really means. There’s surely an implication that Thomas no longer lived at Otterburn but the reason ‘why’ becomes the interesting part. Had Thomas died for that would explain the ‘late’ aspect or had he simply moved away? There weren’t any burials of Thomas Ingles in the records, which is a partial account, so did that mean he moved away? Thomas was a ‘cooper’ for his occupation, which probably was safe (given the heavy dependence on barrels at that time). Now the question becomes if he left Kirkby Malham, where did he go?

Once again in research, there are more questions than answers!
