In December 1902, my great grandfather, John S Angel surfaced in the regional newspaper. His mission was to recover some money that he generously used to pay funeral expenses for Robert O’Connell. Once Robert’s estate was settled, John could recover the cash he had tied up in O’Connell’s affairs. It the court proceedings, the nespaper suggested John’s wife Mary may have had an ‘affair’ with Robert! It was also speculated that Robert may have been killed by the Angel family!! Such ‘character assasination’ by the newspaper might typically lead to those who were implicated to leave their community (Herbster, Wisconsin). To their cerdit, John and Mary stayed there a further 8 years before they left the US in 1910.
