John Fletcher is a very interesting ancestor who lived at Lenham, Kent. His 1710 burial information said he was an ‘Innholder’ which was an interesting occupation. Some months later an inventory of his assets was taken, where he was listed as a ‘victualler’. A man who was a victualler, was one who sold food and drinks and neatly tied into the Innholder declaration.
As one looks at his inventory, we get a picture of a man who had many assets by mention of the locations. He had a kitchen, parlour, shop, buttery, cellar, brewhouse, barn and shed. Lastly, the value of John’s inventory added up to greater than 55 pounds, which although not excessive was reasonable for his day. We must understand that people back then didn’t exist in the inflation riddled times that we do.
