For about 75 years (1730’s – early 1800’s) my Hunt family was a fixture living at Dymchurch, Kent on the southeast coast of England. They lived in the community and worked as a carpenter’s, becoming fixtures.
On November 28 1802, a shipwreck disaster flooded poor Dymchurch with hundreds of corpses to be dealt with. Dymchurch responded with providing a mass grave for the poor deceased souls. Just imagine the stress and confusion such a disaster would have thrust upon Dymchurch! Of course, there was the effort required to dig a grave for such a large number of people but there was also the effort of salvaging the corpses, which was unpleasant in all respects.
In the picture, Colin Walker of Dymchurch, showed the space where this mass grave was situated in their local churchyard. The scope of this disaster affected all the Dymchurch citizens of which my Hunt family was involved.
