Can you imagine having a lovelier surname than ‘Newlove’? It was attached to my 8X great grandfather, John ‘Newlove’. At Kirkburn, Yorkshire was where he lived his life as a yeoman and died there in early 1699. We see some interesting details from John’s 1691 Will, where he made provisions for his wife and their sons John and William.
The term ‘oxgang’ was connected to the land that John left behind. It was a term back in the day which was a measure of how much land an ox could plow in a day. Today, such a reality of land would likely be mentioned in terms of ‘acres’.
