One of the most satisfying discoveries I’ve made researching my family has been proving my descent from United Empire Loyalists. Since I have 2 certificates proving such a claim, I am allowed to use the postnominals UE following my signature. This represents ‘Unity of the Empire’ (UE) and is a Canadian hereditary honour. My Loyalist ancestor, John Albright, was a private in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteers which was a Loyalist regiment in the American Revolutionary War. A ‘Loyalist’ was by definition, one who remained loyal to King George 3rd of England instead of supporting the rebels.
