To say the least, researching your family is an incredible discovery of ‘self’. Going into research, I was more focused on my surname ‘Angell’ and the strange paper trail it left behind. It was an unexpected bonus to learn of the many connections to Scotland that surfaced.
Three of the four branches, Kerr, Craig and Graham emerged on mum’s side but my direct paternal branch ‘Kennedy’ was from Ayrshire in southwest Scotland. There’s much more to be understood about the Kennedy branch and we’ll deal with that in an ensuing blog. For now, have a look at the beautiful tartan examples from the surnames Kennedy, Kerr, Graham and Craig. In the bigger picture of Scottish heritage and society, if you knew the colours and designs of tartans well, you could tell somebody’s clan just by looking at them. You see, everybody’s clan tartan was a ‘uniform’.
