One has to wonder what was going on! Kirkby Malham, west Yorkshire was where my 4X great grandfather John Ingles was born at in 1743 and lived at during his youth. It seemed his father, Thomas was no longer on the scene by John’s birth. On December 26 1747, John’s mother Ann, had a baby girl (also Ann) baptized. It seemed Ann Sr. was a ‘single woman’ at the time and one wonders if she was manipulated by her landlord or perhaps, she’d been a victim of sexual assault. Whatever the reality was, life was hard and unfortunate for the poor lady.
As if life wasn’t hard enough, her little daughter Ann was buried at Kirkby Malham in 1750. Let’s hope it wasn’t from malnourishment.
