Long gone since the time of our ancestors

In todays blog we inspect a London, England location that was significant to my maternal side of the family. The image shows where Anchor and Hope alley was and how the same area looks like today. You’ll see ‘Tench’ street and also ‘Greenbank’ on both maps and the space with the red circles is the area in question. Back in time, my Hampsheir, Gillett, Kerr, Hinderwell and Chew branches lived in or very near this area of London.

Anchor and Hope Alley was allegedly named by the ‘Lightermen’ who would ‘Anchor’ their boats and ‘Hope’ for a load! A Lighterman’s boat was called a ‘lighter’ and ultimately was used to convey freight to or from a moored ship in the Thames.

For reasons that are unclear, Anchor and Hope Alley was demolished in the early 1900’s.
